Moth Trap recording & Photography Gear

Moth Trap Gear:

I use a "Skinner" style portable trap for all moth trapping, and this is a really good bit of kit as it folds up into a briefcase size box for ease of use and portability.  In decent weather it usually stays up semi permanent in the garden:

I have 2 bulbs to choose from in this type of setup - the 40W Actinic shown above, and a 22W Actinic circular bulb shown below, which often yields better results, as you can use capture vanes with it.  Both bulbs give off Ultra Violet light, which attracts the moths:

I use Canon digital cameras for all my wildlife photography, including macro and closeup work.  I specifically use a Canon EOS 7D DSLR with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 dedicated macro lens, alongside an old TTL flashgun and diffuser & Raynox DC250 macro adaptor:

 Welcome to NI Moth Trap

This is a new blog, setup to record, list and share the catches I find in my garden moth trap.

Based in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, all moths recorded are logged with the CEDaR online recording database.

As a macro and wildlife photographer, I try to capture the beauty of these insects, as well as officially record them for conservation purposes, hopefully making a difference in the protection of moths across the country.

Occasionally I'll post some moths trapped from fellow trappers - someone else always gets the good moths, eh?  There are a few NI and especially Co. Armagh trappers, with a wealth of knowledge and experience that way surpasses any stage I will ever find myself at!

Along with moth info, dates and weather data on the night of catches I will include only county info, to preserve our privacy.  I will of course include habitat relevant to each moth nearby as an explanation as to why it visited my trap.

I hope you enjoy my moth trap journey, I look forward to spamming you with some great moths!
